Math Placement

Requirements & Course Sequencing

Math is one of the most important requirements for new Carson Cougs. Without the right math classes, you will not be able to enroll into introductory business courses due to the math corequisite requirement.

Terms to Know

Course Sequence: The order in which classes need to be completed. If you place into a higher level math course in the sequence, you do not need to complete previous courses.

Prerequisite (Pre-Req): A requirement that must be completed before you are able to take a certain class.

Corequisite (Co-Req): A requirement that can be completed before or at the same time as a certain class.

PLACEMENT GUIDE

If you have college math credit, use the Transfer Course Search Tool to see what WSU math course it is equivalent to. When looking at your transfer transcript and the search tool, pay attention to if the subject code has a ‘&’ symbol at the end.

Not every college math class will count towards the Business Math Sequence. If you are not transferring in a course in the business math sequence, you need to take the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment.

ALEKS MATH PLACEMENT ASSESSMENT

If you have multiple math courses and ALEKS scores, you can use whatever option will place you into the highest math course. You can retake the ALEKS assessment four more times to improve your score for no extra charge.

Retake ALEKS MATH PLACEMENT ASSESSMENT

NO MATH CREDIT:

Many common transfer courses DO NOT place you into one of the required math classes for the business sequencing, including but not limited to:

  • Math in Modern Society (or similar)
  • Exploring Mathematics
  • Statistics

If these are your only math credit, YOU NEED TO TAKE THE ALEKS MATH PLACEMENT ASSESSMENT PRIOR TO YOUR ADVISING MEETING!

Enroll in MATH 100 if:

You score a 39 or lower on the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment and have no other math transfer work that can count towards the business math sequence. You still need to take the math placement to enroll into this course. You will have the option to take Math 100 the first half of the semester and Math 103 the second half of the semester so that you can still enroll into business courses. You cannot enroll into this course if you do not take the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment. THIS MUST BE DONE PRIOR TO YOUR ADVISING MEETING.

Enroll in MATH 103 if:

  • You transfer in a course equivalent to Math 100 with an ‘S’
  • You score a 40% or higher on the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment

Enroll in MATH 201 if:

  • You transfer in a course equivalent to Math 101 or 103 with ‘C’ or better
  • You score a 65% or higher on the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment

Enroll in MATH 202 if:

  • You transfer in a course equivalent to Math 106 or Math 201 with ‘C’ or better
  • You score an 80% or higher on the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment
  • You score a 2 or higher on the AP Calc AB Test
  • You earn one of the following IB scores: Math: Analysis & Approaches SL 6 or 7 or HL 4 or 5; Math: Applications & Interpretation HL 6 or 7; Mathematics HL 4 or 5

You satisfied the Business Math Sequence:

  • You transfer in a course equivalent to Math 171, 172, or Math 202
  • You score a 3 or higher on the AP Calc AB Test or a 2 or better on the Calc BC test
  • You earn one of the following IB scores: Math: Analysis & Approaches HL 6 or 7; Mathematics HL 6 or 7
  • You CANNOT test out of Math 202: Calculus for Business with an ALEKS score alone.
